Whispers of the Sword
Thunder & Rain

PERSONAS attempts something his previous Bristol-released material avoided: legibility. Where PSNS-002 leaned into the harder edge of 140 and dubstep, PSNS-003 dials the abrasion back and lets the 90s R&B reference points do more of the work. The result is more accessible. The cost is real.

'Whispers of The Sword' opens with strings that feel almost too well-mannered for the weight that follows. The basslines, while never overwhelming, occasionally read as if they are deferring to the melody rather than coexisting with it. 'Thunder & Rain' is the stronger piece. It carries the same orchestral-meets-soundsystem ambition but resolves the tension more confidently. The warmth in the low end here reads as a choice, not a hedge. The track also benefits from restraint on the percussion, which sits sparse enough to let the gaps do meaningful work.

This release suggests PERSONAS is reaching for a register that the Bristol scene historically does not reward. The home-listening framing he is pursuing is harder to land than the dancefloor version of the same artist, and PSNS-003 is closer to a successful version of it than not. Whether the next release commits more fully to this direction or pulls back toward the harder PSNS-002 sound will say more about where the work is going.
